Comparison will have you questioning an assignment God already gave you.
It will have you looking at someone else's calling, timing, progress, platform, marriage, business, ministry, family, or life and asking: “God, why does theirs look like that and mine doesn't?”
But in John 21:15–22, Jesus gives Peter a lesson that we still need today: stop comparing.

What Stood Out to Me
Before Peter ever started worrying about John, Jesus was dealing personally with Peter. Jesus asked Peter three times about his love and commitment to Him.
Peter had denied Jesus. Peter had experienced failure. Peter knew what it felt like to disappoint himself.
But Jesus restored him. Jesus did not tell Peter that his past disqualified him from his future. Instead, He called Peter forward and gave him an assignment. Follow Me.
And yet, after Jesus had spoken directly to Peter about Peter's own future, Peter looked at John and essentially asked: “What about him?”
Isn't that just like us? God can be speaking directly to us about OUR assignment, OUR purpose, OUR growth, OUR healing, OUR business, OUR family, or OUR next step... and somehow we still find ourselves looking sideways.
Why did God call them to do that? Why are they further ahead? Why is their business growing faster? Why does their ministry look different? Why did their opportunity come before mine? Why does their journey seem easier? Why them and not me?
Jesus Redirected Peter
Jesus' response to Peter was powerful. In essence: what does that have to do with you? You follow Me.
Jesus brought Peter's attention right back to his own assignment. And maybe that is exactly what some of us need today. Stop looking sideways when God is calling you forward. You can become so focused on someone else's journey that you miss the instructions God gave you for yours.
Comparison Is Poison
Comparison can make you question something God already confirmed. Comparison can make you minimize what God placed inside of you. Comparison can make you rush ahead of God's timing. Comparison can make you imitate somebody else's assignment. Comparison can make you believe that because your journey looks different, something must be wrong.
But different does not mean deficient. God never called you to become another version of somebody else. He called YOU.
What God placed inside of you will not look exactly like what He placed inside of your mother, father, sister, brother, friend, spouse, pastor, mentor, or the person you follow online. Their assignment is theirs. Yours is yours.
Keep Your Eyes on Jesus
The danger of comparison is that it shifts our focus. Instead of asking, “God, what are You asking ME to do?” we begin asking, “God, why aren't You doing for me what You're doing for them?”
Those are two completely different questions. Peter wanted information about John. Jesus brought Peter right back to Peter: you follow Me. That is still the instruction for us today.

Where have I been comparing my life to someone else's?
Has comparison caused me to question something God already told me?
Am I paying more attention to someone else's progress than I am to God's direction for my own life?
Have I been trying to make my assignment look like somebody else's?
What is God asking ME to focus on during this season?
Today's Challenge
Identify one area where comparison has been stealing your attention. Then redirect your focus.
Instead of asking, “Why them?” ask, “God, what are You asking of me?” Instead of watching everybody else's lane, get back into yours. Instead of measuring your progress against somebody else's timeline, ask God whether you are being obedient with the time, gifts, opportunities, and assignment He has given YOU.
Your responsibility is not to duplicate someone else's journey. Your responsibility is to follow Jesus.
🙏🏽 Let's Pray
Father, forgive me for the times I have taken my eyes off You and compared my journey to someone else's. Help me trust Your timing, Your process, and Your purpose for my life. Teach me to celebrate what You are doing in the lives of others without questioning what You are doing in mine. Give me the discipline to stay focused on the assignment You have placed before me. When comparison tries to distract me, remind me that my responsibility is simply to follow You. In Jesus' name, amen.

You do not need their calling. You do not need their journey. You do not need their timeline. You do not need their platform. You need the grace and obedience to walk faithfully in YOUR assignment.
Comparison is poison. Stop looking sideways. Start following Jesus.
